Message from the Vice President for Health Sciences
DAVID L. DUNN, MD, PhD
Several months ago, UB Health Sciences launched its own brand with the five Health Science schools coming together as the UB Academic Health Center.

This is not a single physical space or building—it’s too big and too diverse. Rather, it represents a high level of interest on the part of the five decanal units—Dental Medicine, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Public Health and Health Professions—to seek common cause and collaborate more closely in research and education, and training the next generation of health care practitioners, many of whom will populate the ranks of professionals in these disciplines in Western New York.
Late last year, all of the UB physicians rallied around the banner of UBMD. The enthusiasm for having our own “brand” and “name recognition” has been palpable throughout the ensuing months. But all of us know that these are but surrogates for what was already taking place here at UB and our affiliated institutions—outstanding teaching, clinical and translational research, coupled with superb patient care in an academic environment.
The UB AHC and UBMD has and will play a significant role working with its health system partners in the hope of creating a robust research and training environment that will see the people of the region well served by transforming the landscape of health care here in Western New York, creating reconfigured 21st century facilities in which the next generation of physicians and health care professionals would be trained, in large part by UB faculty, and providing high quality, accessible, and affordable health care.
